Women's Lacrosse Wins Season Opener

The Misericordia University women's lacrosse team defeated Albright College, 13-8, Thursday night on Mangelsdorf Field.

Lexee Willey led the Cougars with four goals on five shots while Kaila Quinlivan added a hat-trick to go along with a game-high three assists and seven draw controls.

Kristen Ritter scored twice for her first collegiate goals while first-years Justine Johnson and Katie Reilly also earned their first career tallies.

Amanda Rackliff and Amy Roth closed out the Cougars' scoring line with a goal each. Roth also contributed two assists on the night while achieving her 100th career point.

Albright set the tone early with a goal from Lauren China off the opening draw control. However, Quinlivan would respond three minutes later with the equalizer off an assist from Roth. Reilly would give the Cougars their first lead off a Sarah Bender assist while Rackliff added an unassisted tally to go up 3-1 with 22:18 remaining. All three of the Cougars' goals were approximately two minutes apart.

The Lions would score the next two points to knot the game at three with 19:07 remaining. However, the Cougars responded with eight unanswered goals to take an 11-3 advantage. Quinlivan, Ritter and Wiley each scored twice during the stretch while Johnson and Roth both joined in with one goal apiece.

Misericordia scored four goals in the final 17 minutes of the opening half and tallied four more in the second before Albright found the back of the net. They held the Lions scoreless for nearly 30 minutes of action.

Albright would outscore the Cougars 4-2 in the remaining minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome its massive deficit. Misericordia and Albright both took 22 shots, but the Cougars held a slight advantage (19-15) in shots on goal.

First-year keeper Maggie McGovern had a strong debut for the Cougars with eight saves to go along with her first collegiate victory. Head coach Mat Faas also celebrated his first victory with his new team.

Misericordia will host Susquehanna, Saturday at 4:00 PM.
