The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit early in the third quarter for a 15-12 win over Misericordia University, Wednesday evening at Mangelsdorf Field.
Misericordia scored to open the third quarter and take an 11-8 lead, but the Royals scored six straight goals to in front.
Sean McSwiggan scored three times for the Cougars and
Patrick Luzzi had two goals and two assists.Â
Kyle Vandenberg added two goals and an assist.
Dom Campanale had four ground balls and
Michael Treude,
Paul Hanrahan and
Garett Rogers all had three.
Owen Rogers made nine saves in 18 minutes and Matt Beck made 12 saves over the final 44 minutes.
Scranton scored in the opening minute, but the Cougars answered with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Luzzi placed a shot in the top right corner from near the left post and Hanrahan drove the right side and fired a shot into the upper left corner with 11:41 to go in the first quarter.
After Scranton tied it, the Cougars scored three straight goals in a one-minute span to take a 5-2 lead.
Robert Wagner scored from the top of the circle and
Darian Brown ripped a shot just under the crossbar.Â
Brandon Winslow finished the run with a shot inside the right post with 6:24 left in the first period.
Scranton scored in the final minute of the first quarter, but
Sean McSwiggan followed with a man-up goal to open the second period.
The Royals scored four straight goals to take 7-6 lead, but
Nick Torzilli scored from a tough angle along the right baseline to tie it with 9:26 to play in the second quarter.
Scranton regained the lead, but McSwiggan scored two straight to put MU back in front. He juked a defender on the left wing and fired a low shot inside the right post and then finished a nice feed from Luzzi near the left post to give MU a 9-8 lead.
Vandenberg made it 10-8 in the final minute of the half as he scored from the right side as he was falling to the ground.
Vandenberg bounced a shot inside the left post to open the third quarter and give the Cougars an 11-8 lead, but Scranton scored six straight goals, including three man-up goals to take the lead for good.
The Cougars are 3-2 will host Stockton, Saturday.
