The Misericordia University baseball team swept its series against FDU-Florham with a 14-10 victory, Sunday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Steve Weisensee sparked the Cougars' offense with two hits, two runs, two walks and three RBI. The senior outfielder has a .426 batting average through 19 games and leads the MAC Freedom with 23 RBI.
Kenny Jarema had two walks, three runs scored and a game-winning, two-out RBI single in the eighth inning.
Tyler Holzapfel and
Conor Smith also contributed two RBI for the Cougars. Holzapfel went 2-5 at the plate while Smith was 2-3 with two runs and a walk.
Parker Abate,
Brady Madden,
Sean Lyons and
Billy Kerwien each drove in one run.
Kyle Melahn earned his second win of the season with three strong innings of relief. The senior sidearmer tossed the final three innings for the Cougars, allowing just one earned run on two hits.
Misericordia opened the scoring with five runs in the first inning. Abate started the rally with a one-out walk and scored on a Weisensee double to center field on the following at bat.
After Madden and Holzapfel both reached to load the bases, the Cougars added another run with a Lyons' walk. Kerwien then brought a runner home with a double to center field and Smith knocked in two more with a single up the middle to take an early 5-0 advantage.
FDU-Florham responded with six unanswered runs in the following three innings to take its first lead of the ballgame. The Devils scattered three runs in the second, two in the third and took the lead with a Tyler McCulloch sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, 6-5.Â
Misericordia quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Madden drove home the first runner with a single to center field while Holzapfel added two more with a base hit through the middle to give the Cougars a 8-6 lead.
However, FDU-Florham got two runs back in the fifth and plated another runner in the sixth inning to take a 9-8 lead.
Misericordia strung together two runs in the seventh inning to retake the lead. Abate tied the game with a double down the left field line while Weisensee brought home Jarema with a shallow sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 10-9 advantage.
After the Devils tied things up in the top of the eighth inning, the Cougars put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
FDU-Florham retired the first two batters of the inning, but Misericordia put the following six runners on base. Kerwien lead-off the two-out rally with a hit by pitch while Smith and Boylan loaded the bases with two consecutive walks.
Jarema provided the big hit for Misericordia with a two-out line drive to center field, which plated
Kyle Lennon, who pinch ran for Kerwien, and Smith.
After Abate was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Weisensee worked a walk to drive home another insurance run. Jarema then scored on a wild pitch during the following at bat to put the Cougars ahead 14-10.
Misericordia improved to 13-6 overall with a 5-1 conference mark. The Cougars travel to Arcadia, Tuesday at 3:30.
