Tom Jacob tossed 6.1 shutout innings to lead the Misericordia University baseball team to a 3-1 win over Arcadia, Monday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Â
Jacob allowed just three hits to improve to 5-2 and
Kyle Melahn struck out four over the final 2.2 innings to notch his fifth save.
Â
Parker Abate had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run and
Conor Smith had two hits and an RBI.
Â
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Abate rolled a single through the middle on a 3-2 pitch and took third when
Steve Weisensee singled through the same spot.
Â
Weisensee was caught in a rundown on a pick-off attempt and Abate was safe at home on an obstruction call at the plate.
Â
MU flashed some leather in the next two innings as
Tyler Holzapfel made a nice catch in foul territory down the right field line for the first out in the second and Weisensee made a sliding catch in foul territory near the same spot for the first out in the top of the third.
Â
Billy Kerwien made a diving play to his left to end the Arcadia third.
Â
Shane Hughes coaxed a walk to lead off the fourth and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Jarema was intentionally walked and Abate foiled the strategy when he lined first pitch into left center to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Â
After Jacob worked out a jam in the top of the fifth, Misericordia added a run in the bottom of the frame. Holzapfel reached on an error to open the inning and advanced on a ground out. Hughes lined a single to left and Smith drove in a run with an opposite-field double down the right field line. Hughes was cut down at the plate, but the Cougars led 3-0.
Â
Jacob allowed back-to-back walks with one out in the seventh, but Melahn came on and ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
The Knights plated their lone run on a two-out balk in the top of the eighth.
Â
Melahn got two strikeouts in the ninth to end the game.
Â
Misericordia improved to 25-10. The Cougars will play at Keystone Wednesday in a game that will be broadcast on WQMY-TV.
