The Misericordia University baseball team swept a key MAC Freedom doubleheader from DeSales, 5-1, 8-2, Saturday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Kenny Jarema and
Sean Boylan had two hits each and the Cougars took advantage of five DeSales errors in the opener.
Tom Jacob scattered six hits over six innings to earn the win.
In the nightcap,
Brady Madden and
Shane Hughes had two hits each and
Billy Kerwien drove in three runs.
Alejandro Santiago worked five innings to get the win. Boylan and
Kyle Melahn both tossed a shutout inning of relief.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third in the opener when Boylan doubled to right to lead off the inning and came around on
Parker Abate's single to right.
Boylan ignited a four-run rally in the fifth. He led off with a bunt and came all the way around to score when the Bulldogs committed two throwing errors on Jarema's bunt single.
Jarema moved up on a passed ball and sacrifice bunt before beating the tag at the plate on a fielder's choice on
Steve Weisensee's sac bunt.
Weisensee stole second and went to third when the throw was mishandled and scored on Madden's single through the left side.
Madden advanced to third on a wild throw after a fly out and came home with the fourth run of the inning when
Billy Kerwien reached on an error.
Jacob struck out two and walked two and Melahn worked a perfect seventh.
The Cougars took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap. Jarema lined a single to center and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on an error and came home on a bad-hop single up the middle.
After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Kerwien singled up the middle to make it 3-0.Â
Shane Hughes one-hopped a double off the wall in left to cap the rally.
MU tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third. Madden led off with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice. Misericordia added three runs on a single by Abate and a pair of errors.
The Cougars improved to 19-8 overall and 9-3 in the MAC Freedom.
