Misericordia Hosting NCAA Baseball Super Regional

Misericordia University will host Washington & Jefferson College in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships, Friday, May 24 – Saturday, May 25 at Tambur Field.

The winner will advance to the D-III College World Series, beginning May 31 in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Daily admission for the best-of-three series is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and students.

Misericordia is 35-11 after sweeping top-ranked Christopher Newport in a best-of-five series last weekend.

Washington & Jefferson, 35-11, advanced after winning three straight games to claim the Salisbury Regional.  The Presidents won the only previous meeting between the schools in the opening game of the 2017 NCAA Tournament and went on to finish second in the nation.

Misericordia is playing in its ninth straight NCAA Tournament and is seeking a second consecutive trip to the D-III College World Series.

W & J is playing in its seventh NCAA Tournament.  The Presidents have won 32 of their last 36 games, including their 12th Presidents' Athletics Conference title.

Misericordia is led by eight All-MAC Freedom selections, including Player of the Year Kenny Jarema and Pitcher of the Year Ian McCole.

Jarema led the MAC Freedom in batting (.438), on-base% (.571), hits (60) and runs (55).  He is third in the nation in on-base % and sixth in walks and has reached base in 34 consecutive games and was named the Misericordia Wendy's Athlete of the Year.

After winning two games to earn MVP honors at the MAC Freedom Tournament, McCole set a new school single-season record with his 11th win in the opener at Christopher Newport.
He led the league in ERA (1.88) and strikeouts (57) and is currently tied for fourth in the nation in wins.

Senior closer Kyle Melahn was also a first-team All-MAC Freedom selection.  He was second in the league in ERA (2.58) and fifth in strikeouts (47). 
He struck out 10 batters in three appearances at Christopher Newport and earned a save in the series finale.  Melahn tied his own school record with his eighth save of the season and extended his career record to 16 saves.

First baseman Tyler Holzapfel and right fielder Steve Weisensee were both first-team selections.  Holzapfel leads the team with 45 RBI and is fourth in hits (46) and runs (34).

Weisensee is third in batting (.377) and slugging % (.453) and second in hits (60) and runs (45).

Second baseman Billy Kerwien made the second team while designated hitter Brady Madden earned honorable mention.

Kerwien is hitting .328 with 30 RBI and had a game-tying, two-run single in the series finale at Christopher Newport.    Madden is hitting .327 and is second on the team with 39 RBI.

Starting pitcher Tom Jacob also earned honorable mention status.  He is 7-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 53 strikeouts.
Misericordia is hitting .326 as a team and leads the nation with 106 hit by pitches.  Head coach Pete Egbert owns a 451-265 career record, including 360-178 in 12 seasons at Misericordia.
 
Washington & Jefferson's Ben Marsico was named the PAC Pitcher of the Year to lead nine Presidents on the All-PAC team, including six first-team selections.

Marsico is tied for fourth in the nation in wins with an 11-1 record and a 3.17 ERA.  He has 53 strikeouts and just nine walks in 76.2 innings.

Head coach Jeff Mountain was named PAC Coach-of-Year for the eighth time in 17 seasons at W & J.  He owns a 490-258 career record.

Senior outfielders Dante Dalesandro and James Artale joined Marsico on the first team along with senior infielders Mullen Socah, Josh Crummer and Spencer Howell.
Dalesandro hit .373 with 45 runs, 39 RBI a .373 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases.

Artale was fifth in the PAC in RBI (39) and slugging percentage (.554) and tied for fourth with six home runs.

Socha led the league with 47 runs scored and ranked in the top five in the PAC in doubles (16), home runs (7), slugging (.604), RBI (41), hits (61) and total bases (102).

Crummer hit .364 and led the league with 18 doubles. 

Howell ranked third on the team in runs (32), doubles (11) and home runs (5).
 
Senior pitcher Garrett Harstine made the second team after finishing 6-1 with a 2.75 ERA. 

Relief pitchers Clay Martin and Mitchell Taufer both received honorable mention.

Martin earned seven saves and tossed 11.2 shutout innings in league play.

Taufer was 2-0 with a 1.03 ERA while allowing just 12 hits.
