Morgan Haefele scored a game-high 17 points as the Misericordia University women's basketball team picked up its 20
th win with a 66-58 win at Wilkes, Wednesday.
Alyssa Bondi and
Tessa Zamolyi added 14 points each and
Jordan Barth grabbed 14 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 20-2 overall and 10-1 in the MAC Freedom and clinched their fourth consecutive postseason berth.
Haefele hit three three-pointers as the Cougars took a 14-11 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
After Wilkes pulled even with a three-pointer,
Erica Haefele knocked down three free throws to put the Cougars back in front, 17-14.
The teams traded baskets over the final minute to finish the first quarter tied, 21-21.
Bondi's three-pointer gave the Cougars a 32-30 lead midway through the second quarter, but Wilkes closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to take 39-34 lead at halftime.
The Colonels maintained the lead throughout much of the third half until Zamolyi converted a
Morgan Haefele steal into a layup to put MU back on topo, 44-43, with 2:31 left in the third quarter.
Following a Wilkes basket, Barth made two free throws and the Cougars led 46-45 after three periods.
The teams exchanged the lead multiple times early in the fourth quarter until
Melina Santacroce made two free throws to put MU in front for good, 52-51, with 5:12 to play.
Morgan Haefele hit another three-pointer and Zamolyi made back-to-back layups for a 61-57 lead with 2:30 to go.
Bondi made four free throws in the final minute to clinch the win.
MU will host DeSales, Saturday at 1:00.
