The Misericordia University men's team dropped heartbreaking penalty kick shootout to Stevens in the MAC Freedom championship despite a phenomenal performance by goalkeeper
Andrew Daubenspeck, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw over 110 minutes with Stevens advancing to the NCAA Tournament on a 4-2 result in pk's.
Daubenspeck made 10 saves, including several diving stops, and stopped a penalty kick in the second overtime session to keep the Cougars alive.
The Cougars best scoring opportunities came late in regulation. In the 89
th minute,
Jimmy Towers played a ball from the right flank to
Anthony Yarabinee near the left post, but his header was just wide in the 89
th minute.
Alexei King's corner kick skimmed the crossbar in the 90
th minute and the rebound was off the mark.
Daubenspeck made two huge stops early in the second half, including a diving stop to his right to deny a header from 12 yards out at 52:25.
He followed it up with a diving stop to his left on a shot from 10 yards out off a corner at 60:56.
He got some help from
Logan Moore who made a game-saving deflection on a point-blank shot at 81:27.
Daubenspeck came up big again early in the second overtime with a diving stop of a penalty kick.
Both teams converted their first two penalty kick attempts, but the Cougars missed the next two as the Ducks clinched the title.
Misericordia fell to 12-4-1.
