The Misericordia University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Wilkes, Sunday at Tambur Field. The Cougars won 13-2, 7-3, to take three-out-of-four in the weekend series.
Shane Hughes had two hits and
Santino Manganella,
Dante Salerno and
Derrick Vosburg all drove in two runs in the opener.
Brendan Gray tossed five shutout innings to earn the win.
Austin Miles had two hits in the nightcap and
Tyler Leonard earned the win with 4.1 innings of no-hit relief.
In the opener, the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Emerich led off the inning with a single and took second when Salerno was hit by a pitch. Boylan's opposite-field single drove in a run and Vosburg made it 3-0 with a two-run double inside the left field line. Hughes singled through the left side and
Joe Liscio reached via hit by pitch before Miles singled through the left side to make it 4-0.
Hughes doubled to lead off the third and Liscio was hit by a pitch before
Jason Sanfilippo reached on an error to load the bases. One out later,
Garrett McIlhenney reached on an error to make it 5-0 and Salerno drove in two runs with a double inside the third base bag. McIlhenney eventually scored on a wild pitch and Salerno made it 9-0 on the back-end of a double-steal.
Sanfilippo's RBI-double in the fourth gave the Cougars a 10-0 lead and Manganella had a two-run double in the sixth.
Joe Comins added an RBI-single in the sixth to close out MU's scoring.
Wilkes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of game two, but the Cougars responded with three in their half.
Emerich led off the bottom of the first with a walk. After a fielder's choice, Salerno walked and Boylan singled up the middle to put the Cougars on the scoreboard. Salerno and Boylan later scored on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.
MU added two runs in the second and one in the third.
Miles led off the second with a single and eventually scored on Salerno's RBI-walk.
Brady Madden walked and later scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2.
Miles singled with one out in the third, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before coming home on Madden's sacrifice fly.
