Box Score 2 The Misericordia University softball team split a doubleheader at FDU-Florham, Sunday, to take the weekend series.
The Cougars dropped the opener, 3-2, but took the nightcap, 9-6.
Nicole Elliott had two of MU's six hits in the opener and
Zariah Alvin had a double.
Emily Wenner absorbed the loss while
Alexa McHugh struck out five in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Maddie Holub had three hits, including two doubles, and three runs in the nightcap and
Brianna Holder had two hits and three RBI.
Kaitlin Redling and
Antonia Pacillo added two hits and Elliott drove in two runs.
McHugh struck out four over four innings to earn the win.
In the opener, MU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Holub walked, stole second and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches.
FDU-Florham scored a pair of runs in the top of second and made it 3-1 in the fourth.
The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh.
Pacillo reached on a two-base error to lead off the sixth and pinch-runner
Haley McMenimen came home on Alvin's double down the left field line to get within a run.
Elliott singled to open the bottom of the seventh, but FDU-Florham got a fielder's choice and double-play grounder to end the game.
The Cougars took a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings in the nightcap.
After FDU-Florham scored twice in the top of the third, the Cougars got one back in the fourth and added four more in the fourth.
Alvin drew a lead-off walk in the first and moved to second on Holub's single through the left side. Holub scored on a two-out error and Holder singled up the middle to make it 2-0.
Megan Murphy drew a one-out walk in the second and advanced to third on Holub's two-out double down the right field line. Elliott followed with a two-run single down the left field line to give the
Cougars a 4-0 lead.
Amanda Butera led off the third with a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Pacillo's two-out single to left.
The Cougars put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Holub doubled to left center and scored on Redling's single down the right field line.
After Butera reached on an error, Holder drove in two runs with a single to right center and McHugh made it 9-2 with an RBI-double to center.
The Cougars will open a weekend series with a doubleheader at DeSales, Saturday.
