The Misericordia University baseball team increased its winning streak to eight straight games with a 14-1, 9-7 sweep of Delaware Valley, Thursday at Tambur Field.
The Cougars improved to 16-7 and moved into a tie for second place in the MAC Freedom.
Sean Boylan hit a two-run homer and
Owen VanNewkirk hit a three-run double in the opener and
Dalton Emerich and
Dante Salerno both had two hits.
Joe Valenti allowed just four hits over six innings to earn the win.
Kyle Kane picked up the win in relief in the nightcap and
Tyler Leonard worked two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save.
Boylan drove in four runs and
Santino Manganella had three hits and scored three runs.
The Cougars scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings of game one to take a 14-0 lead.
Garrett McIlhenney walked to lead off the first and went to third on a single by Emerich. Emerich stole second and McIlhenney came home on the throw. Salerno reached on a bunt single and Boylan's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.Â
Shane Hughes walked and
Brady Madden's infield single loaded the bases before
Joe Liscio walked to force in a run.
VanNewkirk doubled to right center to drive in three runs and Liscio added a sacrifice fly as part of four-run second inning to give MU a 7-0 lead.
In the third, Salerno tripled with two outs and Boylan homered to make it 9-0.
Austin Miles had an RBI-single and
Austin Sienkiewicz added a two-run single to fuel a four-run rally in the fourth as the Cougars went up 12-0.
Manganella and
Brendan Gray drove in runs in the fifth to close out the scoring.
McIlhenney drew a lead-off walk in the nightcap and went to third on Manganella's bunt single. Salerno drove in a run with a single through the left side and Boylan's double to right center made it 3-0.Â
Randy Mateo, Madden and Liscio all reached via hit by pitch to force in MU's fourth run.
Delaware Valley scored a run in the top of the second, but the Cougars answered with three runs on a pair of sacrifice flies and an error.
After the Aggies rallied to tie the score in the fifth, the Cougars went back in front on Mateo's RBI-double in the bottom of the frame.
Manganella doubled to lead off the sixth and scored an insurance run on Boylan's ground out.
Leonard retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings.
Misericordia will open a four-game series with FDU-Florham, Saturday at noon.
