MU Baseball Falls in NCAA Opener

The Misericordia University baseball team dropped its opening game of the NCAA Tournament to University of Northwestern, 6-3, Friday night in St. Paul, MN.

Sean Boylan had a double while Owen VanNewkirk, Dante Salerno and Austin Miles all drove in runs.

Santino Manganella, Shane Hughes and Joe Liscio added hits for the Cougars.

Joe Valenti struck out seven in 5.1 innings of relief of Brendan Gray.

The Cougars will face Johns Hopkins, Saturday at 3:30 (EDT).

Northwestern took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  The Eagles opened the game with three straight hits, including a ground-rule double, and took advantage of an MU error to score its second run.

MU got a run back in the bottom of the first and tied it in the second.  Garrett McIlhenney reached on a third strike wild pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and moved up on Manganella's single through the left side.  McIlhenney advanced to third on Boylan's fly ball to right field and came home on VanNewkirk's sacrifice fly to center.

Hughes singled through the left side to open the second inning and went to second when Salerno reached on an error.  Following a sacrifice bunt by Liscio, Miles tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left center.

Northwestern went back in front with a pair of runs in the third on back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly.

Boylan doubled to right center with one out in the bottom of the third, but was stranded at third base.

Northwestern strung together four straight two-out hits to score two runs in the fourth and took a 6-2 lead.

Boylan drew a two-out walk in the fifth and VanNewkirk was hit by a pitch, but Owen Boerema got his third strikeout of the inning to escape the jam.

Boylan reached via hit by pitch to lead off the eighth and VanNewkirk walked.  One out later, Hughes was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Dante Salerno drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right, but pinch-runner Kyle Lennon was thrown out at third base to end the inning.

Liscio opened the ninth inning with a hit by pitch and Miles reached on an error to bring the tying run to the plate.  Boerema retired the next three MU batters to close the game.
