MU Volleyball Splits on Senior Day

The Misericordia University volleyball team split a tri-match with Elizabethtown and McDaniel on Senior Appreciation Day, Saturday on Doc Mould Court.

MU dropped the opener to E-Town, 3-0, but took the nightcap against McDaniel, 3-0.

Faith Merritt led the Cougars 11 kills in the opener while Shelby Hastings and Sadie Stockslager added seven and six kills, respectively.

Jessica Cleveland had 10 digs and three aces and Jenna Schuda had 19 assists.

In the nightcap, Fiona Pyfer had 13 kills and 12 digs and Lena Eldrenkamp had five kills.

Annika Massa had 13 assists and three aces and Sophie Winter had three blocks.

The Cougars recognized seniors Merritt, Adele Decker, Pyfer, Delaney Boyd, Winter and Eldrenkamp along with fifth-year senior Shelby Hastings prior to the nightcap.

In the opener, E-Town used two big runs to build a 24-12 lead.  Hastings, Merritt and Stockslager all had kills as part of a late 5-0 run, but it wasn't enough in a 25-17 defeat.

MU jumped out to an 11-5 lead and led throughout much of the second set, but the Blue Jays closed on an 8-0 run to win, 25-19.

E-Town built and 8-1 lead in the finale and went to win, 25-17.

Schuda had two aces and Decker had two kills as MU took a 6-2 lead in the first set against McDaniel and never looked back on the way to a 25-17 win.

MU took advantage of four McDaniel errors to open the second set and never trailed in another 25-17 win.

Misericordia led from wire-to-wire in the third set and used two aces by Massa to fuel a 6-0 run to put the set away.

Misericordia, 19-8, is regionally ranked for the first time in school history and will host FDU-Florham in a key MAC Freedom contest, Tuesday.
