The Misericordia University baseball team opened the season with a split of a doubleheader at Shenandoah, Sunday.
The Cougars took the opener, 15-8, but dropped game two, 7-6, in 10 innings.
Brady Madden had four hits, including a double and a homer, and drove in three runs in game one.Â
Jason Sanfilippo had three hits and three RBI and
Owen VanNewkirk had three hits and two RBI.Â
Garrett McIlhenney and
Derrick Vosburg both had two hits and two RBI.
Tyler Leonard worked six innings to earn the win with relief help from
Joe Valenti and
Connor Maryniak.
The Cougars scored six runs in the top of the first inning and built a 13-4 lead after seven innings.
In game two,
Santino Manganella and
Austin Miles both had two hits.
David McCurry struck out seven over 6.2 shutout innings of relief.
MU fell behind 6-0 after three innings, but scored five runs in the fourth and tied the game in the eighth.
McCurry escaped a first-and-third no-out situation in the ninth, but the Hornets won it with a two-out walk-off single in the 10
th.
