Cougars Split League Opener Behind McCurry's Gem

The Misericordia University baseball team opened its MAC Freedom schedule with a split of a doubleheader with King's, Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field at the University of Scranton.

After dropping the opener, 5-2, on a walk-off homer, the Cougars got a complete-game effort from David McCurry in a 6-0 win.

McCurry struck out seven and allowed just seven hits and the Cougars gave him all the support he would need with a five-run first inning.

Connor Maryniak had three hits and drove in three runs.

Garrett McIlhenney and Joe Comins sandwiched walks around Brendan Gray's infield single to load the bases.  Derrick Vosburg reached on an error to drive in the first run and Maryniak singled to left field to make it 3-0.  Jason Sanfilippo singled in a run and Vosburg came home on an error to close out the scoring.

MU added a two-out run in the second when Vosburg doubled to left and came home on Maryniak's single.

McCurry didn't allow a runner past second base until the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Cougars had their eight-game winning streak snapped in the opener.

Brendan Gray had two hits and Brady Madden drove in both MU runs.

McIlhenney drew a lead-off walk and Brock Bollinger was hit by pitch and both came around on Madden's double to left.

King's tied the game with runs in the third and fourth innings and won it a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Leonard scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings while absorbing the loss.

The teams are scheduled to complete the series, Monday at Scranton.
