MU Baseball Splits, Finishes Second in MAC Freedom

The Misericordia University baseball team finished second in the MAC Freedom championships after splitting a doubleheader at Arcadia, Saturday.

The Cougars took the opener, 6-1, to force a decisive third game in the best-of-three series, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2.

Misericordia is 33-12 and will await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Brock Bollinger had three hits and five RBI in the opener and Garrett McIlhenney added three hits.  Jack Regenye had two hits and scored twice.

Steve Rinda allowed just one run over six innings to get the win and Joe Valenti tossed three shutout to earn the save.

Bollinger had two hits in the nightcap, including a solo homer, and Derrick Vosburg had two hits.  McIlhenney was hit by pitch to extend his school single-season record to 27 HBP and stretch his on-base streak to 45 games.

In game one, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Regenye reached on a one-out bunt single and went to third on McIlhenney's single through the right side.  After McIlhenney swiped second, Bollinger singled to center to plate two runs.

The same trio combined for a two-out run in the fifth.  Regenye singled and moved up on McIlhenney's walk before Bollinger singled through the left side to make it 3-0.

Brady Madden singled to open the sixth and advanced to third on a sac bunt and wild pitch before coming home on Jason Sanfilippo's single up the middle.

Arcadia got a run back in the seventh, but the Cougars tacked a pair of two-out insurance runs in the ninth.

Joe Comins walked and moved up on a sac bunt.  McIlhenney was hit by a pitch and stole second and Bollinger singled through the left side to make it 6-1.

Arcadia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the final and added a run in the sixth.

The Cougars cut the margin in half in the seventh when Sanfilippo singled  and went to third on Connor Maryniak's double before coming home on a wild pitch.

Arcadia got the run back in the bottom of the seventh and Bollinger led off the eighth with a solo homer to get within 3-2.
