In a tightly-played contest, the Misericordia University men's soccer team fell to Widener 1-0, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Â
The Pride got on the board early, scoring 3:54 into the match to take a 1-0 lead. The loss snapped the Cougars' five-match unbeaten streak.
Â
MU generated their first scoring opportunity at 6:02 when
Nicholas Passaniti sent a towering shot towards the goal from 30 yards out. Widener's goalkeeper made a leaping save to keep their 1-0 lead intact.
Â
The Cougars threatened again in the 42nd minute when
Timothy Worthington collected the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot to the lower right side of the goal. The Pride's keeper made a diving save, deflecting the ball out of play to give MU a corner. Despite a well-placed kick by
Ahmad Neama, Misericordia was unable to score off the corner attempt and entered halftime trailing 1-0.
Â
MU came close to evening the score in the 71st minute when
Patrick Sipera fought through traffic and centered a ball for
Shane Macko, who was charging towards goal. The ball narrowly missed Macko's extended leg and rolled back into Widener's possession.
Â
With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, Misericordia was awarded another corner. Directly off the kick,
Drew Weaver headed the ball to the upper portion of the goal, however the Pride's keeper snagged the shot.
Â
Weaver made another bid to tie the match at 82:19, stepping into the ball from the penalty arc that found its way through traffic, but was stopped by a diving save from Widener's keeper.
Â
The Pride managed to control the ball for the majority of the final stretch of play to secure the 1-0 victory.
Â
MU had four shots on goal to Widener's one with Weaver accounting for two shots while Passaniti and Worthington both had one.
Â
The Cougars return to action against King's College, Saturday at 6:30.Â
