Last-Minute Own Goal Lifts MU Over Del Val

The Misericordia University men's soccer team scored in the final minute to defeat Delaware Valley, 1-0, in their MAC Freedom matchup at Robert A. Lipinski Field, Wednesday night.

After the Cougars were awarded a late corner, a misdirected header by a Del Val player resulted in an own goal to give MU the win.

Misericordia goalkeeper Santino Jannotte made the first save of the game in the 25th minute, turning aside a shot to the bottom portion of the net.

Later in the first frame, Stevan Patino recorded MU's first shot on goal of the evening. The scoring chance was stopped by the Aggies' keeper to keep the match locked in a scoreless tie.

The Cougars out shot Del Val, 5-2, in the first half with each keeper making one save through 45 minutes.

The Aggies generated some offensive momentum early in the second half, putting a pair of shots over the crossbar in the 54th and 55th minutes.

Spencer Pisani responded at 58:59 with a shot that was scooped up by Del Val's goalkeeper.

Both teams played conservatively with the ball as the match ticked towards the 90th minute, careful not to make a costly turnover down the stretch.

After surviving an Aggie corner kick at 88:18, Misericordia picked up a corner of their own with 32 seconds remaining.

Looking to take a last-minute lead, Patino quickly directed the ball towards a slew of bodies in front of the net where a Del Val player misplayed his header to give MU a 1-0 lead.

MU outshot Delaware Valley 8-5 through 90 minutes with Pisani and Patino accounting for the Cougars' two shots on goal.
