Kevin Lazdowsky scored a career-high 33 points and
Arvel Chandler made six free throws in the final 3:07 to clinch a 72-71 win for the Misericordia University men's basketball team, Wednesday at Alfred.
R.J. Wiese and
Matt Prociak both had nine points each for the Cougars.
Chandler made two free throws to give the Cougars a 66-64 lead with 3:07 to play. Alfred went back in front with a three-pointer and Wiese made a jumper to give the Cougars the lead for good, 68-67, with :44 to play.
Chandler made two more free throws to make it 70-67.
Following a Saxons basket, Chandler made two more free throws to give the Cougars a 72-69 win with :07 to play.
Alfred added two free throws for the final margin.
The Cougars trailed early, 15-7, but Lazdowsky scored 12 straight points for MU to take a 23-22 lead with 6:38 left in the first half.
Prociak's three-pointer gave MU a 31-30 lead with 1:27 to go, but Alfred scored four straight points to take a 34-31 halftime lead.
Alfred took the biggest lead of the second half, 45-39, with 15:36 remaining, but the Cougars rallied and tied the game, 50-50, on a three-pointer by Wiese.
The teams traded the lead eight times over the final 11:01 until Wiese's go-ahead bucket with less than a minute to go.
