The Misericordia University men's basketball team returned to action with an 81-50 loss at Christopher Newport in the opening round of the Captains Shootout, Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

Jack Gallagher scored a team-high 16 points and Kevin Lazdowsky added 15.

D.J. Orloff had eight points and Patrick Brown grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Following a Lazdowsky layup that got the Cougars within 12-7 early in the first half, CNU went on a 13-3 run to open a 25-10 lead midway through the first half.

The Captains led 39-22 at halftime and maintained a comfortable margin throughout the second half.

The Cougars will face Ferrum in the consolation game, Monday at 3:00.
