The Misericordia University hockey team clinched the first regulation win in program history with a 4-2 win over King's, Wednesday night at the Toyota SportsPlex.
Â
Jack Tos opened the scoring for the Cougars midway through the second period with a deflection in front of the net.
Cameron Hawks and
Jonathan Lush earned assists on the goal at 9:56.
Â
Ethan Hollingsworth doubled MU's advantage at 4:11 into the third period with a rebound goal after a shot from
James Eng.
Â
Just 34 seconds later,
Nicholas Solema scored shorthanded to give Misericordia a 3-0 lead at 4:45.
Â
After King's got on the board, MU answered right back with an unassisted one-time goal by
Charles Obobaifo at 12:49 to restore the three-goal advantage.Â
Â
The Monarchs cut the deficit to two with a late power play goal. However, Misericordia hung on to secure their first regulation win in team history and collect three points in the MAC standings.
Â
King's put together strong offensive zone time, forcing five saves from Jacob Perrin in a span of a minute and a half. Solema contributed a blocked shot to keep the Monarchs off the board.
Â
King's went back on the power play less than a minute after the goal, but was unable to light the lamp thanks to four saves by Perrin and a timely block by Laggis.
Â
The Cougars protected their one-goal lead through the duration of the middle frame and exited the ice looking to hold off King's for the final 20 minutes of action.
Â
MU opened the third strong as
Dom Della Civita fired a shot on goal just 50 seconds into the period. Eng and
William Moran registered shots on goal as the Cougars continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone.
Â
After a clean entry to the Monarchs' zone, Eng ripped a shot from point-blank range. Although King's goalie made the initial save, the puck bounced into open space and found the stick of Hollingsworth, who was crashing the net. Hollingsworth buried the rebound to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead at 4:11, with Eng picking up a helper on the play.
Â
MU was assessed a penalty shortly after the goal, however a blunder at the blue line by a King's defenseman allowed Solema to take the puck towards goal on a partial breakaway. Protecting the puck from a backcheck, Solema wristed a shot that squeaked through the netminder's pads to increase Misericordia's lead to three. The unassisted shorthanded goal came at 4:45, just 34 seconds after the 2-0 marker.
Â
The Monarchs ended MU's shutout bid at 12:11 to make it a 3-1 contest.
Â
The Cougars answered right back after their strong forecheck forced an errant pass that went directly to Obobaifo, who quickly fired a one-timer that caught King's goaltender by surprise. Obobaifo's first goal of the season just 38 seconds after the Monarch's scored, putting MU back in the driver's seat with a 4-1 lead at 12:49.Â
Â
A power play goal by King's cut the deficit back down to two goals, however Misericordia held down the fort for the final minutes of the third to finish off their 4-2 win.
Â
Tos, Hollingsworth, Solema and Obobaifo all found the back of the net for MU.
Zach Ross led the team with six shots on goal while
Eric Kotkowski contributed four blocks.
Ryan Karbach won 12 of 18 faceoffs and Perrin made 42 saves between the pipes.
Â
The Cougars and Monarchs face off once again, Saturday at 7:00.
