MU Baseball Sweeps Twinbill From Leb Val

The Misericordia University baseball team opened its series with Lebanon Valley by taking a doubleheader, Sunday at Tambur Field.

The Cougars won 5-1, 14-8 to extend their win streak to nine straight.

In the opener, Joe Valenti tossed a four-hitter and held the Dutchmen scoreless until the seventh inning.  Gabe Bunn had two hits and two RBI and Jason Sanfilippo and Joe Comins both added RBI.

Comins had four hits in the nightcap and Brock Bollinger drove in five runs.  Justin Calvarese worked 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win.

MU scored five runs in the fifth to break the game open.

In game one, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second and added four insurance runs in the sixth.

Connor Maryniak doubled to right center to start the second and scored the game's first run on Bunn's two-out single to right field.

Jack Regenye singled to start the sixth and scored on Comins' two-out single to right.  Sanfilippo singled to right center and pinch-runner Owen Daminger came all the around to score to make it 3-0.  Brooks Kanwisher doubled in a run and Bunn reached on a bunt single.  Kanwisher came home on a passed ball to give MU a 5-0 lead.

In game two, Lebanon Valley scored three times in each of the first two innings to take an early lead.

Bunn doubled in a run and scored on an error to get the Cougars within 6-5 in the third inning.

Regenye drew a lead-off walk in the fourth and moved up on a pair of wild pitches before scoring the tying run on Bollinger's sac fly.

Garrett McIlhenney was hit by pitch to put the Cougars ahead in the fifth and Bollinger made it 10-6 with a bases-loaded triple to right center.  Maryniak reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on Comin's two-out single to right.

McIlhenney walked to start the seventh and later scored on a throwing error and Maryniak gave the Cougars a 13-7 lead with a sac fly.

McIlhenney added sac fly in the eighth for the final run.
