Despite Dominant Effort, Men's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw

The Misericordia University men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw in their road match at Penn State Brandywine, Saturday afternoon.

Despite attacking the net with 11 shots on goal, the Cougars were unable to solve the Nittany Lions' goalkeeper.

Nicholas Passaniti registered the first shot on goal for MU at 15:33 when he sent a ball towards goal from just outside the box.

The Cougars aggressively pressed the PSU Brandywine defense and were awarded a free kick in the 28th minute of play. Passaniti centered the ball from the top left corner of the box to a charging Drew Weaver, but his header to the right side of the goal was snagged by the goalkeeper.

Misericordia had a slew of scoring chances in the 31st minute as Anthony Yarabinee, Elijah Uray and Max Jamieson all had shots that were blocked. Shortly thereafter, a bid by Stevan Patino was turned aside by the keeper.

The Cougars' last opportunity of the first half came in the final minute when Corbin Lankford delivered a hard pass to Weaver inside the box. Weaver's close shot was blocked and dribbled to the far left side of the pitch, allowing Brandywine to escape danger.

Misericordia picked up right where they left off offensively to open the second as relentless pressure on the ball gave the Cougars several scoring chances early on, including three consecutive shots in the 53rd minute. Patrick Sipera had one shot blocked and one saved while Passaniti's bid to open the scoring was blocked as well.

MU made a strong push in the final 10 minutes of play with Weaver, Yarabinee and Anthony Numssen all sending shots on goal.

Sipera, Passaniti, Weaver and Reese Dieffenderfer all recorded a pair of shots on goal for the Cougars, who outshot the Nittany Lions 28-3. Brandywine did not register a shot on goal and relied heavily on their keeper, who made 11 saves.

Misericordia returns home to Mangelsdorf Field to take on the University of Scranton, Tuesday at 7:00.
