MU Men Earn Hard-Fought Win Over Scranton

The Misericordia University men's soccer team picked an impressive win over regionally-ranked Scranton, 2-1, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Drew Weaver and Reese Dieffenderfer scored for the Cougars and Charlton Alonzo made six saves to earn the win in goal.  Patrick Sipera and Max Jamieson added assists for MU.

Locked in a defensive battle early in the first half, Misericordia took the lead on its first shot of the game at 21:43.

Patrick Sipera's free kick from 25 yards out on the right flank found Weaver at the six where he headed it across the box into the left side netting at 21:43.

The Cougars added an insurance goal on a rebound just seven minutes later.  Max Jamieson's shot from close-range was blocked, but he collected the rebound and tapped a pass to Dieffenderfer who squeezed a shot inside the right post for a 2-1 lead at 28:38.

The Royals cut the margin in half with a goal at 43:41.

Both teams stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half and Alonso came off his line to win a shot out of the air to deny Scranton's best opportunity of the second half in the 84th minute.
