The Misericordia University men's soccer team opened its MAC Freedom schedule with 6-5 loss at FDU-Florham, Saturday.
Noah Romig led the Cougars with two goals and two assists and
Shane Macko added a pair of goals.Â
Max Jamieson had a goal and three assists and
Patrick Sipera and
Kohen Stiles each had an assist.
MU took a 1-0 lead on Macko's goal midway through the first half and Romig made it 2-0 just 12 minutes later.
Macko received a pass from Jamieson on his left and lifted the ball directly over the keeper's gloves into the top right part of the net to give Misericordia the 1-0 lead at 20:32.
FDU-Florham threatened with a PK five minutes later, but
Thomas D'Arco made a diving save to his left to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Misericordia.
MU doubled their lead at 32:15 as Jamieson crossed the ball to Stiles, who passed directly to his left where Romig struck the ball into the center of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
The Devils scored their first goal at 33:11 off a deflected shot and the Cougars took a 2-1 lead into intermission.
Misericordia kept up the pace coming out of the half as Romig passed a through-ball to Macko, who slotted it in the left corner of the net to increase the Cougars lead to 3-1 at 50:13.
FDU-Florham responded with four straight goals in a six-minute span to take a 5-3 lead.
Misericordia wasn't done, however, as Romig split a pair of FDU-Florham defenders and a ripped a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner to get within 5-4 at 68:47.
With MU playing a man-down, the Devils took advantage and tallied a much-needed goal at 76:33.
The Cougars kept clawing back just a minute later. An MU corner kick bounced around inside of the box, and landed at the feet of Sipera, who passed it directly to Jamieson who tapped it into the goal to make the score 6-5 at 77:44.
The Cougars managed just one more shot over the final 12 minutes.
