The Misericordia University women's wrestling team lost its home opener to York, 21-20, Friday Night in the Anderson Center.
Each team won five bouts to finish in a 20-20 tie, but the Spartans earned the winning point on criteria #2 – most pins.
Down 10-0 after three bouts,
Michael Williams got the Cougars on the board with a 15-1 major decision at 149.
Williams spun behind for the first takedown and used a cross-body right to earn four near fall points on the way to a 7-1 lead after one period.
He escaped to start the second period and used a low single-leg shot for another takedown to extend his lead to 11-1 lead after two periods.
Williams scored another takedown on a deep double-leg and added a riding time point for the final margin of victory.
Chase Stephen used a third-period rally to pick up an 11-9 win at 157 to get the Cougars within 10-7. Down 8-5 to start the third, Stephen quickly escaped and scored a takedown on the edge of the mat to take a 9-8 lead. He picked up a penalty point on a false start and added a riding time point.
After York picked up a major decision at 165 to take a 14-7 lead,
Anthony Matas answered with an 18-2 technical fall at 174.
Matas used two deep double-leg takedowns to take a quick 6-1 lead and ran a bar for two back points on the edge of the mat to lead 8-1 after one period.
He escaped to start the second and hit another double-leg that turned into a six-point move to go up, 15-1. After giving up an escape, he closed out the match with a low double-leg at the buzzer to cut the York lead to 14-12.
Robbie Anderson picked up a pair of takedowns to take a 6-2 lead after one period at 184. The wrestlers traded reverses in the second period and Anderson led 10-4 heading to the third.
He scored a quick reverse and used a tough cross-body ride to earn eight near-fall points in the final minute and added riding team to win 19-4 to give MU its first lead, 17-14.
York went back in front, 20-17, with a pin at 197.
Aiden Hidlay picked up a late takedown to break a 1-1 tie on the way to a 5-2 win at 285 to tie the team score, 20-20.
MU will return to the Anderson Center for the Cougar Classic Tournament, Saturday at 10:00 am.
