The Misericordia University women's basketball team's fourth-quarter comeback fell short in a 60-52 loss at Lycoming, Wednesday night.
Emily Romanowski led the Cougars with 13 points and Morgan Janeski added 10 while Chase Purdy recorded nine assists and 10 rebounds. Caitlin Landgraf had eight points and three blocks and Brenna Hunt earned five steals.
Misericordia started the game with a three-pointer by Romanowski. Lycoming scored two straight baskets, but layups by Purdy and Hunt gave Misericordia a 7-4 lead. The teams traded points and Ava Cirigliano's free throw gave the Cougars their last lead of the night, 9-8, with 2:02 to go in the first quarter.
Lycoming scored the remaining points in the first quarter and held the lead, 12-9.
The Warriors started the second quarter with a layup before a three-pointer by Janeski cut the Lycoming advantage to two. The Warriors went on an 11-point scoring run that was broken up by a jumper by Janeski. Cirigliano hit a jumper with eight seconds left and the Cougars trailed 25-16 at halftime.
Misericordia started the third quarter swinging, going on an 8-2 scoring run from two Caitlin Landgraf shots, a Romanowski layup, and a Purdy jumper, to get within 27-24 with 6:43 to go in the third period.
Lycoming closed the quarter on a 14-4 run, and with ten minutes left in the game, the Warriors led 41-28.
Down 48-32 with 7:30 to play, the Cougars dominated the next five minutes. Points from Janeski, Romanowski, Hunt, and Landgraf pushed the game to within two possessions, and a layup and three-pointer by Marisa Captoni cut the margin to 53-52 with 1:50 remaining.
Lycoming responded with an 8-0 run to end the game.
