MU Rally Comes Up Short Against Immaculata

The Misericordia women's basketball team took a tough 61–59 loss to Immaculata on Saturday evening.

Emily Romanowski led the Cougars with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Chase Purdy added 14 points. Brenna Hunt chipped in eight points, and Ava Cirigliano contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Misericordia fell behind early in the first quarter as the Mighty Macs opened the game on a 15–5 run. The Cougars responded with a 9–2 run to cut the lead to one midway through the second quarter, but Immaculata answered with an 8–3 spurt to take a 30–26 advantage into halftime.

Madelyn O'Shea scored a layup to open the second half, but Immaculata quickly found its rhythm and used a 21–11 third-quarter run to build a 14-point lead heading into the fourth.

Early in the final quarter, Cirigliano converted back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to 10. The Cougars kept the momentum going, forcing several quick turnovers and turning them into easy points, sparking an 18–3 run that tied the game at 54–54 with just over three minutes remaining.

Immaculata regained the lead with a layup on the next possession, but Misericordia answered when Romanowski battled for an offensive rebound and finished the putback. The Mighty Macs scored again in the paint to go up by two, and Purdy later hit one of two free throws to pull the Cougars within one with under a minute left.

Immaculata added another basket with 28 seconds remaining, and although the Cougars had a chance to tie the game, they were unable to convert a three-pointer and were forced to foul. After Immaculata made one of two free throws, Romanowski drove in for a layup to trim the deficit to one with five seconds left, but the Cougars had to foul again. The Mighty Macs once more went 1-for-2 at the line, and Misericordia was unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Misericordia is now 3–5 and will travel to Lycoming College on Wednesday, December 17.
