The Misericordia University hockey team dropped its third and final meeting of the season to King's, 2-1, in a close MAC contest, Saturday night at the Revolution Ice Centre.
Â
James Eng scored the lone goal for the Cougars at 10:13 of the third period, crashing the net after a puck redirected off the end boards.Â
Â
Eng led MU with five shots on goal.
Jack Powers blocked two shots while
Ryan Karbach won a team-high eight faceoffs.
Anthony Shrum made 29 saves in goal for Misericordia.
Â
Jaron Ketterman gave the Cougars their first scoring opportunity just 36 seconds into the first period, but his shot was turned aside by the Monarchs' netminder. Between the pipes at the other end of the ice, Shrum faced his first test of the evening at 1:02 and made the save, keeping the contest scoreless.
Â
Misericordia took an interference penalty at 7:26, giving King's the first power play of the game. The Monarchs managed to put two shots on net, both of which were denied by Shrum.
Â
MU began to generate some offensive momentum midway through the first frame, sending four shots on goal in under two minutes.Â
Â
With time ticking down in the period, Eng laid out to block a shot and preserve the 0-0 tie into the first intermission. The Monarchs held a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots through the first 20 minutes of play.Â
Â
King's got on the board at 2:38 of the second period, taking a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
The Monarchs continued to apply pressure in their offensive zone and fired four shots towards goal in the span of just over four minutes. Shrum denied two shots while the other two were blocked by Ketterman and
Chase Cummings.
Â
Misericordia began to turn the tables following King's offensive flurry as
Zach Ross,
Jonathan Lush,
Brendan Vettraino,
Zachary Micciche,
Nicholas Solema,
Colin Stow and Eng all registered shots on goal in the middle stages of the second.Â
Â
MU's efforts paid off, as they drew a penalty and headed to their first man advantage of the night at 19:07. The period expired without the power play unit finding the back of the net, leaving the Cougars with 1:07 of time on the man advantage to start the third.Â
Â
King's controlled play for the majority of the first half of the third and scored on a breakaway at 9:36 to extend their lead.
Â
Shortly after the 2-0 marker, a seemingly harmless dump-in by the Cougars proved to be consequential when it took an unexpected redirection off the boards while the Monarchs' goalie was behind the net. Eng buried the puck into the unattended goal for his team-leading seventh goal at 10:13 to cut MU's deficit to one goal.Â
Â
Misericordia pulled their goalie with exactly one minute remaining in regulation, searching for the game-tying goal. The Cougars hopes were dashed when they were called for a penalty at 19:36, sending King's to its second power play of the evening. The Monarchs were able to fend off a final offensive push by MU and held onto their 2-1 lead through the final seconds.
Â
The Cougars return home to the Toyota SportsPlex when they host Stevenson, Friday at 5:00.
