Cougars Drop Pair to DeSales

The Misericordia University baseball team fell to DeSales in both games of their MAC Freedom doubleheader, 11-6 and 11-5, Saturday afternoon at Tambur Field.

In the opener, Jared Hoffman had two RBI on two hits, including a double. Jack Regenye and Brock Bollinger also doubled in the loss.

Brian Korchok accounted for two of the Cougars' runs. Jeff Policarpio, Owen Daminger and Chasen Kirk all had an RBI.

Rocco Viscito pitched two relief innings with two strikeouts and no hits.

In the nightcap, Bollinger and Brooks Kanwisher both had an RBI on two hits and one run. Daminger, Hoffman and Drew Van Horn all recorded an RBI as well.

Bollinger, Joe Peters and Josh Burger all doubled.

Bollinger opened the scoring in the first game on a throwing error that put runners on second and third. On the next at-bat, Daminger hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Kanwisher and gave MU a 2-0 lead. The Cougars scored on their third consecutive plate appearance when Hoffman doubled to the gap in right center, knocking in Korchok from third. After one inning, Misericordia led, 3-0.

DeSales erased their deficit with three runs in the second. The Bulldogs added five runs in the fourth and  three more in the fifth, taking an 11-3 lead.

Policarpio stopped the bleeding in the bottom of the sixth with a single through the right side, scoring Burger.

Hoffman kept the game within Misericordia's reach with a seventh-inning single to right that brought in Korchok, making it an 11-5 ballgame. The Cougars got one more run back on a fielder's choice by Kirk, but that was all they could muster as DeSales closed out the 11-6 victory.

After the Bulldogs struck first in the second game, MU answered back with an RBI bunt single by Van Horn that tied the game, 1-1.

A five-run fifth inning opened up a 6-1 lead for DeSales.

The Cougars got three runs back in the seventh to cut their deficit to two runs. First, Bollinger singled through the right side and advanced to second on a throwing error, bringing home Burger from third.

On the next at-bat, Kanwisher hit a sac fly to left to score Rafael Fernandez. Daminger added another run with an RBI single that knocked in Bollinger. After the three-run frame, Misericordia now trailed 6-4.

The Bulldogs responded in the top of the eighth with five runs of their own, growing their lead to 11-4.

MU got one run back in the bottom of the ninth on a groundout that scored Kanwisher, but DeSales hung on to win the second game of the day, 11-5, clinching the series win.
