The Misericordia University women's volleyball team defeated Mary Washington in four sets in the season opener on day one of the University of Scranton Invitational.
Cassandra Genduso (12) and Meghan Peters (10) led a Cougars' offensive attack that saw them record 45 kills as a team. The duo pitched in three service aces apiece as well.
Jenna Schuda dished out 29 assists and dominated from the service line with seven aces. Defensively, she also led the way in digs with 12.
​Kiera McCaffrey was third on the team in kills with seven on a .455 hitting percentage. She added four solo blocks defensively as well.
​After a 3-3 tie to open the match, MU went on a 6-1 run that sparked a dominant first set. The lead extended to as much as 18-11, as Misericordia ended up taking the first set, 25-20.
​The second set began with the Cougars overcoming an early 10-7 deficit. The team chipped away at the lead until the score was tied at 15. From there, MU rolled with a 10-3 run to come away with a 25-19 win.
​Mary Washington took set three in a close 26-24 affair. However, Misericordia bounced back with a furious 6-0 start to the fourth set. The lead ballooned to as much as 18-8 and 20-10, as MU cruised to a 25-16 set four victory to win the match.
​The Cougars accumulated 16 kills on a .400 hitting percentage in their commanding set four win. Peters was responsible for five of them.
​MU stifled the Eagles' offensive attack in the first two sets, holding them to .034 and .000 hitting percentages, respectively.
​Misericordia will face William Smith and Scranton Saturday afternoon at 4 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
