The Misericordia University women's volleyball team swept Susquehanna in its final match of the Swarthmore College Phoenix Invitational, Saturday (25-22, 25-15, 25-21).
Meghan Peters led the way offensively with 11 kills and two service aces.
Jenna Schuda dished out 35 assists and surpassed the 3,000-career assist mark. Schuda also tallied 12 digs as one of the three Cougars that registered double-digit digs, including
Maggie Duda (13) and
Sarah Journey (10).
It was a neck-and-neck duel in set one with the teams exchanging blows until the score was 21-21 heading into the final serves. After a service error from the River Hawks to make it 22-21, MU scored three of the final four points, and Peters capped off the set with a kill to give the Cougars a 25-22 first set victory.
The teams went back-and-forth to begin the second set, with runs by each team leading to a 12-10 MU lead near the midway point. It was all Misericordia afterwards as they went on a 7-1 run to go up 19-11. They rode their momentum to a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead.
Set three came down to the wire as Susquehanna had a slim 20-19 advantage late as they attempted to avoid the sweep. MU put their stamp on the match with a 6-1 run. A service ace from
Keira McCaffrey helped give the Cougars a 25-21 victory to secure the 3-0 win.
Misericordia held Susquehanna to just four kills on a -.182 hitting percentage in the second set. McCaffrey compiled two of her team-leading four blocks during the set.
The Cougars will return home to face Widener on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
