Elijah Uray scored his first goal of the season to lift the Misericordia University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Widener in front of a Homecoming crowd, Saturday evening at Mangelsdorf Field.
Locked in a defensive battle throughout the night, Uray scored the only goal of the game with three minutes remaining in the first half.
Off a throw-in deep in the Widener end,
Reese Dieffenderfer carried the ball to the right edge of the box and rolled a pass to the middle of the box.
After a Widener deflected the ball, Uray one-timed shot into the upper right corner from 25 yards out to give MU a 1-0 lead.
Early on, both team's defenses stepped up to thwart any potential attacks.
Misericordia's first chance off the contest came on
Anthony Numssen's strike from 25 yards out, but the Widener keeper made the save near the right post at 14:45.
At the other end MU keeper
Thomas D'Arco made a good read and came off his line to deny a potential scoring opportunity for the pride at 15:00.
Widener's best opportunity of the first half came a sliding toe poke near the left post, but the effort was wide at 38:58.
Uray gave the Cougars the lead just three minutes later.
D'Arco made his biggest stop of the match with a diving stop on a tough-angle shot from the right flank at 58:56.
The Cougars nearly added an insurance goal in the 78
th minute when
Noah Romig's low shot from 10 yards out was denied on a diving save by the Pride keeper.
Numssen had another good look in the 85
th minute but his shot from eight yards out was just high of the crossbar.
