The Misericordia University women's volleyball team swept tri-match with a pair of five-set wins over Lynchburg and Cortland, Saturday on Doc Mould Court.
Against Lynchburg,
Cassandra Genduso led the Cougars with 14 kills while
Taylor Marsh added nine.
Olivia Conza posted 31 assists and 21 digs.
Misericordia came out hot in the first set, scoring six unanswered points, including a kill from Genduso and an ace from
Isabella Lutter. A kill from
Jennifer Nicometo and a block from
Keira McCaffrey extended the lead to 9-1.
The Hornets closed the gap to three, but the Cougars pushed their advantage to 22-13 on a kill from Marsh. Lynchburg scored seven straight points late, but Lutter sealed the set with a kill as MU won 25-21.
The Cougars fell behind early in the second set, but used a block from Lutter and Marsh to spark a 6-1 run and tie the score, 12-12. An ace from
Maggie Duda helped MU take the lead before the teams traded points late. Kills from Marsh and Genduso gave the Cougars a 21-20 advantage and Misericordia closed out the set, 25-23.
MU took an early lead in the third set with a 7-3 run, then added five straight points to go up 13-8. Lynchburg responded with a 6-0 run and eventually pulled away with a 9-2 stretch to win 25-19.
Lynchburg carried its momentum into the fourth set, taking an early 4-0 lead and extending it to 17-9. Misericordia attempted to rally with an 8-2 run but fell 25-20 to force a deciding set.
The Cougars fell behind 7-1 in the fifth set before responding with a 7-1 run, highlighted by an ace from Nicometo and a kill from Lutter to tie the score at 8-8.
After a late Lynchburg lead, Marsh tied the set with a kill before a Hornets attack error gave MU a 14-13 advantage.
Marsh sealed the 15-13 victory with a shot to the left corner as Misericordia remained unbeaten in five-set matches.
Against Cortland, Genduso again led the Cougars with 14 kills while Nicometo added 11. Conza recorded 40 assists and 17 digs while McCaffrey posted eight total blocks.
Cortland took the opening set, 25-14, after overcoming an early Misericordia lead. The Cougars responded in the second set, battling back from an early deficit before earning a 27-25 victory to even the match.
The third set remained close throughout, with Misericordia coming through late to secure another 27-25 win and take a 2-1 lead.
Cortland answered in the fourth set, holding off the Cougars' attack to win 25-23 and force a deciding set.
In the final set, Misericordia battled through another tight start before pulling ahead late. The Cougars held off Cortland's comeback attempt to secure a 15-12 victory and complete the tri-match sweep.
