The Misericordia University men's basketball team fell at Stevens, 88-81, Saturday afternoon.
Arvel Chandler and
Matt Prociak led the Cougars with 22 points apiece while
Jack Gallagher recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Prociak put the Cougars in front early, backing his defender down in the post and finishing a quick drop-step with his left hand.
Misericordia then fell into an early scoring slump, going nearly five minutes without a basket to fall behind 12-2.
Out of a timeout, Prociak worked his way into the paint and finished a layup off a drive-and-dish from Gallagher to stop the drought.
Chandler continued the fight for Misericordia, knocking down a right-wing three-pointer to bring the Cougars within single digits, 15-7.
Trailing 30-12 with nine minutes remaining in the half, Prociak connected on a baseline jumper to get the Cougars back in the scoring column.
The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half with Misericordia trimming the deficit to 51-37.
Gallagher opened the second half with a strong drive to the basket, spinning back to his right and shielding off the defender for a layup.
On the following possession,
Darryl Wright drilled a right-wing three-pointer as the Cougars pulled within 53-42. Chandler knocked down another three-pointer and followed it up nearly two minutes later with a layup and Prociak added two free throws to cut the deficit to 60-52 with 13:07 to go.
The Cougars carried that momentum over the next five minutes, scoring consistently and forcing several stops. With just under eight minutes remaining, Gallagher's layup made it a one-possession game at 69-67.
Misericordia continued to battle, as Prociak finished inside to bring the Cougars within one at 75-74.
The comeback fell short as the Ducks closed the game on a 13-7 run over the final four minutes to secure the victory.
