Late Rally Dooms MU Women at Stevens

The Misericordia University women's basketball team fell to Stevens, 87-75, Saturday afternoon in Hoboken, NJ.

Caitlin Landgraf earned a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Morgan Janeski added 20 points. Lizzy Mitchell and Emily Romanowski also reached double digits in points with 14 and 10, respectively.

The Cougars came out swinging in the first quarter by hitting seven of their first eight three-point attempts.

Janeski started the game by hitting a three from the left wing and Mitchell followed by drilling a three from the left corner.

Janeski hit another three-pointer from the left wing and Romanowski hit the fourth in a row from the right wing.

Landgraf scored the next four points for MU with a jumper from the right block and a layup to put Misericordia up by 14 with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Janeski continued to be the hot hand with another three-pointer from the left corner and Mitchell scored the next five points for the Cougars with two free throws and a three-pointer from the left wing.

After an 8-0 scoring run by the Ducks, Marisa Captoni joined hit a three-pointer from the right corner, giving the Cougars a 27-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Stevens opened second quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game with seven minutes to go in the half.

Mitchell reclaimed the lead for Misericordia with an over-the-shoulder layup and a free throw. Landgraf hit the next two jumpers for the Cougars from the right block and the left elbow to put MU up 34-30 with 5:09 to go in the half.

Mitchell added another three-pointer from the left wing and Raegan Palmer joined the scoring with a driving layup to put MU up seven with 3:04 left.

Landgraf hit a driving layup to close the half and give MU a 41-34 lead.

Romanowski hit the first few points of the second half with a layup and two free throws and Landgraf made a turn-around jumper from the left elbow to put MU up by nine with 7:45 to go in the third quarter.

Landgraf and Romanowski hit back-to-back layups and a Romanowski free throw put Misericordia back up by double digits with 6:06 to go in the third.

Janeski added another three-pointer from the left wing to increase MU's lead to 13 with 5:37 to play in the third period.  Stevens scored 17 straight points over a five-minute span to take a 56-55 lead.

Landgraf made MU's first few points of the fourth quarter on an over-the-shoulder layup and a layup off a putback and Janeski's three from the left wing put MU back in front, 67-66, with 6:03 to go.

The Ducks broke a 67-67 tie with a 20-8 run over the final 5:48.
