Early Outburst Leads Cougars Past Wilkes

The Misericordia University baseball team defeated Wilkes, 13-8, in their final non-conference of the season, Tuesday.
 
Bryant Diaz had three with three RBI and Gavin Dillard added three hits with two RBI and three runs scored. Ben St. Pierre also added three hits with one RBI and two runs scored and Shane Patten had two hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
 
Misericordia's offense started hot, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings. Brooks Kanwisher was hit by a pitch and scored when Dillard lashed a triple to center field. Patten drove in a run on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Owen Daminger plated a run on a fielder's choice.  He stole second and third and scored on an error to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead after a half inning of play.
 
Wilkes scored a run in the bottom of the first, but MU produced four more runs in the second inning. St. Pierre kicked off the inning with a single to right field. Kanwisher walked and Dillard singled to right field to score another run. Kanwisher scored on a passed ball and Patten singled to left field to score one more run. Daminger brought one more run home on a fielder's choice to make it 8-1.
 
The Colonels scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars responded in the top of the fifth. Michael Duda walked and St. Pierre singled to center field. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Kanwisher and Diaz knocked both of them in on a double to left field, extending MU's lead to 10-4.
 
Wilkes added one more run in the bottom of the fifth.

Misericordia added another two runs in the top of the seventh. Kanwisher was hit by a pitch, Dillard singled to left field and Patten walked to load the bases. Diaz added another RBI on a single to left field and Dillard scored on a wild pitch to increase MU's lead to 12-5.
 
The Colonels responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Misericordia brought another run home in the top of the eighth. Duda singled to right field and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. St. Pierre singled to right field to make it 13-7.
