3/27/2009 7:17:34 PM

A late rally fell short as the Misericordia University baseball team dropped a tough 6-4 decision at Wilkes, Friday.

The Cougars allowed five unearned runs in falling behind 6-0 though six innings.

MU battled back with four runs in the top of the eighth.

Cody Hack led off with a walk and moved to third on Mike Murphy's double down the left field line. Mike D'Amara reached on an error as both runners advanced.

Nate Newman made it 4-2 on a sacrifice fly and Brandon Calafut drove in D'Amara with a triple to deep centerfield.

Calafut scored MU's final run on Jeff Slanovec's groundout.

Murphy and Philippi both had two hits to lead the Cougars.

Steve Peet was the tough-luck loser, allowing just three hits and no earned runs over five innings.

Max Weintraub worked three innings in relief.

MU is 11-9 overall and 0-2 in the Freedom and will visit DeSales for a doubleheader, Saturday.
