Sophomore goalie
Ryan Kay made a string of early saves to keep MU close but the Cougars eventually fell to defending MAC champion FDU-Florham 13-4, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Kay made 13 saves in the first half and finished with 17 overall in 50+ minutes of action. That included a handful of great stops against a Devils team that enjoyed a majority of the possession thanks to a 20-1 advantage in face-offs.
Four different players tallied for the Cougars.
Lee Blair,
Kyle Calabro and
Matt Gonzalez were all on the scoresheet while senior defenseman
Brian Ratajczak scored his first career goal on a break into the offensive zone.
Although FDU scored on their first shot of the game just one minute in, Kay responded with six saves in the first six-and-a-half minutes of action. With 4:30 left in the quarter, the sophomore made a great stick save on an open shot from the middle to keep the score at 1-0.
The Devils finally broke down the resilient Cougar goaltender with two late goals to grab a 3-0 advantage after one quarter. By the end of the first period Kay had already racked up nine stops on 16 shots faced.
While FDU scored early in the second quarter, Kay was at it again with a save to thwart a one-minute man-advantage for the Devils.
Minutes later, on another FDU power play, Kay made an outstanding close-range stick save from the right side of the crease. But FDU scored with 11 seconds remaining on the man-advantage to stretch their lead to 4-0.
The Cougars began to attack late in the second quarter with Blair hitting the post before Calabro finally scored to pull Misericordia back to within three. However, the Devils managed two late goals to take a more comfortable 6-1 lead into halftime.
Kay had another nice play with MU down 9-1 in the third, getting down low to block a hard shot from the middle. Then Ratajczak, who caused five turnovers in the game, forced one deep in Misericordia's defensive zone and took it himself all the way down the field for his first goal in a Cougar uniform.
The Devils ran off four goals in a 2:22 span early in the fourth to put the game away for good. Blair scored late in the period and also assisted Gonzalez as MU grabbed the last two points of the contest to make the final score 14-3.
Freshman attack
Brian Gill had a career day for FDU-Florham, totaling nine points on six goals and three assists.
Adam Koontz added two goals and three assists.
The Cougars fall to 2-7, 0-4 and will host Elizabethtown on Saturday.
