Kay, Calabro Lead MU Past Manhattanville

Ryan Kay led another strong defensive effort and Kyle Calabro provided the offense to lead the Misericordia University men's lacrosse team to an 8-3 win over Manhattanville, Monday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Kay made 12 saves in goal and the defense killed off a pair of two-minute penalties in the second half as MU improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.

Calabro had four goals to lead the attack and Lee Blair added two goals and an assist while Sean Forsyth and Jack Stang both added goals. Matt Gonzalez had a pair of assists for the Cougars.

Calabro gave MU an early lead with an assist from Pat McTague just two minutes into the game.

After the Valiants tied it with 9:14 to play in the opening quarter, Calabro charged from behind the cage to give the Cougars a lead that never relinquished.

Forsyth took a pass near midfield and race untouched the rest of the way to make it 3-1 with 1:43 remaining in the first period.

Stang slipped a shot just under the bar midway through the second quarter to put MU ahead, 4-1, and Blair one-timed a pass from Gonzalez with 1:15 left in the half for a 5-1 lead.

The Cougars thwarted a two-minute penalty to start the third period and Kay made a big save midway through the stanza.

Calabro took a feed from Blair behind the net and ripped a shot over the right shoulder of the Valiants' goalie for a 6-1 lead with 5:49 left in the third quarter.

Kay made another big save with just under two minutes remaining in the period.

Manhattanville made it 6-2 with a goal early in the fourth quarter, but Calabro made it 7-2 with an assist from J.R. Lauri with 6:33 to play and Blair scored a man-up goal with 4:16 to go for an 8-2 lead.

Jared Hunt had eight groundballs for the Cougars while Don Squire, Drew Abatangelo and Blair had three each.

MU will host Lebanon Valley, Wednesday at 4:00 at Mangelsdorf Field.
