Sydnie Battle had a break-out game as the Misericordia University women's lacrosse team scored 16 times in the second half en route to a 22-17 win over Wilkes, Tuesday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Battle had team-highs with six goals and seven ground balls. She also added three assists to quadruple her season point total.
Senior
Camilla Hansen scored six times in the victory. Freshman
Kate Pagnotta had four goals and four ground balls, while classmate
Catie Viegas scored twice and caused four turnovers. Also contributing were juniors
Emily Foley (3 goals, 5 ground balls) and
Krista Shenk (goal, 4 assists, 6 ground balls).
The teams combined for a shocking 31 goals in the second half after a low-scoring first half ended with Misericordia up 6-2.
The Cougars outshot their opponents 27-7 in the opening half, with Wilkes' all-time saves leader
Cassie Cronin making 13 stops to keep her team close.
MU came out firing but couldn't catch a break early on. Hansen hit the post right off the opening draw, and Battle also hit the framework two-and-a-half minutes in.
Still in the opening minutes, Pagnotta was saved from close range. Hansen was peppering the Wilkes goal and saw two other shots turned away by Cronin in the opening five minutes.
The Lady Colonels took the lead at 23:33 of the first half off a free-position goal. Misericordia finally broke through and reversed the deficit with two goals in a span of 23 seconds (by Pagnotta and Hansen).
Battle scored right off the draw after halftime to put MU ahead 7-2, and then assisted Pagnotta 45 seconds into the period. Misericordia stretched its lead to nine after Viegas' goal made it 17-8.
After a Cougar yellow card, Battle scored two shorthanded goals in less than a minute to put MU up 19-10.
Misericordia (3-12, 1-11) earns its first MAC victory of the season and will host Scranton in its season finale on Thursday.
