J.R. Lauri scored the game-winning goal with under a minute to play to lift the Misericordia University men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 14-13 win at FDU-Florham in their Freedom Conference opener.
Lauri had three goals and two assists and
Kyle Calabro added three goals and one assist.
Adam Lenhard had two goals and two assists, including the game-tying goal late in the fourth period, and Nick Santillo and
Sean McGuigan both added two goals and an assist.
Josh Shanker made nine saves over the final three quarters to earn the win in goal.
After battling to a 10-10 tie after three periods,
Mason Quickel gave the Cougars an 11-10 lead with an unassisted goal with 11:55 remaining.
After FDU scored twice to take a 12-11 lead,
Trevor Bodnar scored unassisted to tie it, 12-12, with 5:31 to play.
The Devils took the lead just 30 seconds later and Lenhard tied with 3:37 to go to set up Lauri's game-winner.
MU used four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead late in the first period.
Down 2-1, Santillo tied it at 8:17 and Calabro scored twice in less than a minute to give MU a 4-2 advantage. Lauri made it 5-2 with 5:14 to go in the quarter.
Santillo and Calabro added goals in the final two minutes to close the first period with a 7-5 lead.
McGuigan scored MU's only goal of the second quarter and the teams went to halftime tied, 8-8.
FDU took a 19-8 lead late in the third quarter, but Lenhard cut the deficit to 10-9 with an assist from Lauri with 2:26 to play.
McGuigan tied it 10-10 with an assist from Lenhard less than a minute later.
Jeff Antonucci and
Sean Forsyth led the Cougars with four groundballs while Lauri,
Jared Hunt and Josh Schwartz all added three.
The Cougars will host King's, Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
