MU Women's Soccer Set for NCAA Opener

The Misericordia University women's soccer team will open the 2016 NCAA Tournament against Swarthmore, Saturday at 1:30 at Amherst.
Amherst will face Lasell at 11:00 a.m. with the winners meeting, Sunday at 1:30 .

MU, 17-3, is making its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 10th overall after winning the MAC Freedom Conference championship.

Swarthmore, 14-3, earned an at-larger berth after falling in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference championships.  In their third NCAA appearance, the Garnet are coming off a run to the Elite 8 a year ago.

Misericordia has won four of seven meetings against Swarthmore, including their last meeting in 2012.  The Cougars are 0-1 against Amherst with the only meeting coming in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

The MU line-up features 10 All-MAC Freedom players, including Offensive Player of the Year Jacqueline Stevens and Defensive Player of the Year Kristen Ritter.

They were joined on the first-team by Alex Gallagher, Kylen Smith, Alyssa Pojero while Jeanna Orfanos, Emily Szeflinski, Alexa Alchevsky, Evelyn Logie were named to the second-team.  Ashley Edgell earned honorable mention.

Stevens (10g, 13a) leads the MU attack with 33 points while Gallagher (12g, 2a) adds 26 points.  Edgell (9g, 3a) has 21 points and Amber Hartranft (5g, 2a) and Jeanna Orfanos (4g, 4a) both have nine.

Smith (2g, 7a), the lone senior on the team, has 11 points.

In goal, Alyssa Pojero has 14 shutouts and a 0.45 goals against average.

The Cougars are allowing just 5.5 shots per game and have outscored their opponents, 54-9.

Swarthmore is led by Marin McCoy (10g, 6a) with 26 pts while Katie Dougherty (7g, 4a), and Hannah Lichtenstein (6g, 6a) both have 18 points.

Sophomores Sydney Hunter and Amy Shmoys have split time in goal and have combined to allow just 0.65 goals per game.

Amherst, 15-2-1, won the NESCAC championship while Lasell is 18-2-1 after winning its seventh straight Great Northeast Athletics Conference title.

Amherst carries a 14-match unbeaten streak, including a 12-match win streak, into its 15th NCAA appearance.

Hannah Guzzi (15g, 4a) has a team-high 34pts while Emily Hester (7g, 3a) and Rubii Tamen (6g, 5a) add 17 points each.  Chelsea Cutler owns 0.67 GAA in 17 starts in goal.

Lasell is on an18-match win streak since opening the season 0-2.

Megan Cullen (21g, 5a) has 47 points and Carly Zdanek (10g, 9a) adds 29 points while Sarah LaClair has seven shutouts and a 0.62 GAA.
