This Day in History, November 8, 2008: MU Men's Soccer Claims First MAC Freedom Crown

11/8/2020 3:21:00 PM

The Misericordia University men's soccer team claimed its first MAC Freedom title in dramatic fashion, November 8, 2008.
The Cougars came out on top of a penalty kick shootout for the second straight match after rallying to score the game-tying goal in the final seconds of regulation.

Playing a man down and with Wilkes clinging to a 1-0 lead, Max Campbell launched a big throw from the left sideline and Tim Bullis headed it inside the right post with just eight seconds remaining.

Neither team was dangerous in the two overtime periods as both only managed one shot over 20 minutes.

In the shootout, Alec Parker put Misericordia up 1-0 and the Colonels answered on their first attempt.

MU's second attempt was stopped and Andrew Loyd was equal to the task for the Cougars on Wilkes' second shot.

Joe Scanlon buried his attempt for a 2-1 Misericordia advantage, but Wilkes pulled even.

MU's Tyler Mensch converted and Wilkes responded to make it 3-3 with one shooter remaining.

The Wilkes keeper went to his left to make a save and give the Colonels a chance for the win, but MU's Loyd made another diving stop to force sudden death.

Cody Harman buried his attempt for 4-3 MU lead, but Wilkes answered to stay alive.

Josh Yoo gave the Cougars a 5-4 lead and Loyd went to his left to make a save and clinch the win and the Tournament MVP award.

After a scoreless first half, Wilkes took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick less than a minute into the second period.

Misericordia played the final 40 minutes short-handed after a red-card violation.

Loyd made two saves for the Cougars plus three stops in the shootout.
