The Misericordia University men's lacrosse team earned its first conference win with a 15-6 stomp of Alvernia Wednesday. The win ups the Cougars to 3-4 (1-1 MAC).
Sean McGuigan had the best game of his young college career with seven goals—enough to singlehandedly outscore the Crusaders.
Zach Buckley got the Cougars started with 12:54 to play in the first period. The goal began a back-and-forth scoring battle that would continue into the second period.
After seeing the Crusaders net two goals for a 2-1 lead, McGuigan scored back-to-back goals to reclaim the lead for the Cougars. The lead was short lived, and the teams headed into the second period tied 3-3.
The Crusaders took their final lead at the start of the second. Down 4-3, McGuigan scored another pair of consecutive goals to put his team up 5-4.
The Crusaders matched at 5-5 before seeing the home team score seven consecutive goals—three by McGuigan. The Cougars led 12-5 before the Crusaders were allowed to score another goal.
Lee Blair closed the night with three goals and three assists for the Cougars. Buckley finished with two goals, and Patrick McTague, Tim Bojanowski and Dean Tilton each chipped in a goal.
Ryan Kay didn't start at goal, but he played the majority of the game in the cage. He made 14 saves on 17 shots to earn the win.
The Cougars travel to FDU-Florham Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference match-up with the Devils.
