The Misericordia University baseball team scattered 12 hits to put up an 8-5 win over Moravian College in a nonconference game Wednesday.
The Cougars got off to a slow start as starter Andrew Yasinski allowed three runs over the first two innings, but Andres Gonzalez knocked in the team's first run in the bottom of the second with a ground out to short.
The Cougars took control in the third with five runs. Mike Murphy led off with a single and quickly stole second. He advanced on a passed ball and scored three batters later on a two-run single by Brandon Calafut. Calafut and Jeff Slanovec both scored on a two-run single by Jamie Philippi. Gonzalez drove Philippi home moments later to put the Cougars up 6-3.
Murphy led off the fourth with a walk and scored on a two-run homer by Nate Newman two batters later to put the Cougars up 8-3.
Yasinski allowed two Moravian runs in the eighth, but the Cougars held on to win. He pitched a complete game and allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out four.
Chris Tuttle led the team with three hits. Newman, Calafut, Philippi and Gonzalez each drove in a pair of runs.
The Cougars play at Scranton tomorrow at 4 p.m.
