The Misericordia University baseball team was swept in a Saturday doubleheader against FDU-Florham, 3-2 and 18-9.
Jamie Philippi found himself locked in a pitcher's duel in game one. He allowed eight scattered hits in eight innings of work. The Devils tagged him for just two runs before scoring the final blow off Max Weintraub in the ninth.
Mike Murphy walked in the first inning and extended his on-base streak to 60 straight games dating back to March of last season. He added a hit and scored both runs.
Game two was a bit more humbling for the Cougar pitching staff. They allowed 18 runs, 16 earned, on 18 hits and 10 walks. Steve Peet earned the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in four innings.
The Cougars collected 18 total hits in game two, but stranded 13 base runners. Murphy again reached base—this time on a hit-by-pitch.
The Cougars didn't get on the board until the sixth. Down 12-0, Nate Newman jacked a lead-off home run to left.
Brandon Calafut knocked in the team's second run an inning later on a fielder's choice, but the Cougar's biggest inning came in the eighth.
Tony Carter started a streak of three consecutive hits with a grounder through the left side. The Cougars cashed in on two wild pitches that sent Carter and Chris Tuttle home. Cody Hack and Newman added RBIs to make it 17-6.
The Devils added a run in the ninth, and Bubba Jasinski responded with a line-drive, three-run homerun off the left field foul pole to give the Cougars an 18-9 final.
The Cougars honored their 2009 seniors in pregame Senior Appreciation Day festivities before game two. Calafut, Mike D'Amara, Hack, Murphy and Peet were all honored.
The Cougars host Eastern Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
