The Misericordia University baseball team picked up its first Freedom Conference win, Thursday at King's, 14-1.
The top five batters in the MU line-up combined for 16 hits with
Mike Murphy and
Brandon Calafut rapping four hits each.
Mike D'Amara and
Nate Newman had three hits apiece and
Jeff Slanovec and
Cody Hack both added two hits.
Murphy had four RBI and D'Amara, Newman and Slanovec all drove in three runs each.
Jamie Philippi scattered nine hits over seven innings to pick up the win and Hack worked two scoreless innings of relief.
The Cougars jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Murphy singled, stole second and scored on D'Amara's single. D'Amara eventually scored on a throwing error.
MU added three runs in the second on Murphy's sac fly and another RBI-single by D'Amara and Newman's RBI-double.
Misericordia made it 8-0 in the fourth.
Bubba Jasinski reached on an error and came around to score on Murphy's single.
D'Amara added an RBI-groundout and Newman had a sacrifice fly.
Murphy led off the sixth with a single and scored on Newman's single and Slanovec singled to drive in Newman.
The Cougars added a run in the eighth when Calafut doubled and scored on Slanovec's single.
Hack opened the ninth with a single and scored on Murphy's two-run homer. D'Amara, Newman and Calafut followed with back-to-back-to-back singles with D'Amara coming home on Slanovec's sacrifice fly.
MU is 12-11 overall and 1-4 in the Freedom and will host King's, Friday at 3:30.
