An eight-goal Manhattanville run broke up a tight game and allowed the Valiants to grab a 15-9 victory over the Misericordia University men's lacrosse team, Wednesday in Purchase, NY.
Lee Blair's man-up goal with 4:33 remaining in the second quarter tied the game at 6-6 and though Manhattanville grabbed two late goals to take a halftime lead, the Cougars were right in the mix.
But a poor third quarter doomed Misericordia as MU was out-scored 4-0 and went 0-for-5 on man-advantage opportunities in the period.
The Valiants grabbed two more early in the fourth to go up 14-6 before
Josh Schwartz' goal with 9:15 left in the game stopped the bleeding.
Freshman
J.R. Lauri led the Cougars with three goals and two assists.
Kyle Calabro had three goals, and
Matt Gonzalez added a pair of assists.
A whistle-filled contest saw 20 total penalties called, 11 of which were on Manhattanville.
Misericordia had jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a man-up goal from
Zach Buckley and an even-strength strike from Calabro. The Valiants answered with three goals in a four-minute span to take their first lead.
From there, the teams traded goals for more than a quarter. The score was tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6 before Manhattanville went on its eight-goal streak.
Freshman goalie
Michael Orabona saw 45+ minutes of action, making 11 saves. Calabro and McTague each had a team-high six ground balls.
The Cougars fall to 3-10, 1-7 and will host DeSales on Saturday.
