Gettysburg Holds Off Men's Soccer, 1-0

9/8/2010 9:17:10 PM

A 67th minute goal doomed the Misericordia University men's soccer team as the Cougars fell 1-0 to Gettysburg, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

MU had been threatening all half, forcing the Bullets' keeper into several nice saves. Unfortunately, all the build-up was undone when a free kick from the right side ended up in the Cougar goal after a Gettysburg striker aggressively held off his defender and poked the ball past sophomore Mason Astaneh (two saves).

The goal came against the run of play, but it knocked the Cougars back and Gettysburg successfully killed off the rest of the game.

Right after halftime, MU senior Joey Scanlon had a pair of chances that almost put the home team in front. The captain put a 25-yard free kick inches wide of the near post and then beat the Gettysburg center back only for his shot to be saved.

Ten minutes into the second half, Scanlon flicked through to Andy Bush but his half-volley was also just inches wide of the right goalpost. Six minutes later, Bush snuck through the defense but the Bullets keeper came up with a reaction kick save to keep the game scoreless.

At this point the Cougars were clearly knocking on the door but the tide changed on Gettysburg's set piece goal.

The Bullets had opened the first half with a run of possession, and forced Astaneh into a tough save two minutes in. The sophomore punched a long throw to the top of his box and then had to extend low to his left to smother the rebound.

Misericordia gradually worked their way into the game and had a good chance with 14 minutes gone, as Bush hit a turning shot that was saved.

Later in the half, junior Dan Pinto played Bush through and the sophomore slid the ball across to Scanlon for an easy tap-in, but the offsides flag was already up.

The Cougars drop to 1-2 on the season and host Immaculata on Saturday.
